What can you expect when you stay at budget hotels? Budget lodging is not always pretty. When compared to a five star luxury hotel, they are indeed a disappointment. However, there is at least one very good reason to consider staying at a second rate hotel: it’s cheap, dirt cheap! The more you save on a hotel stay the more money you will have for dining out, watching entertainment and sampling the best the city has to offer.

What should you know about staying in hotel, motel or hostel? Hotels tend to be slightly more professional in accommodations, and may include standard amenities for a one or two star hotel. Motels are generally modest locations, usually rented rooms from a single building operated by a homeowner. Hostels group people together and are popular among the student and backpacking crowd.

The substandard hotel will always offer basic amenities including a private room, a ceiling, a bed, a dressing area and some form of security system. Ideally, the lowest quality hotel you can find would still provide you with protection from criminal activity and inclement weather. Hotels used to be locked by door and key and a few motels might still use this system. However, most hotels are now secured by card identification.

Believe it or not, some hotels in other countries do not provide a private bathroom or a private shower. Some hotels may not promise hot water when you need it. Some hotels do not offer individually controlled air conditioning, but standardize all rooms at a set temperature. Knowing this, one starts to appreciate such “extra” amenities as individually controlled air conditioning, hot water, private bathrooms and showers and, of course, cleanliness.

Some budget motels might also include slightly above standard features, in order to attract more business. It is not uncommon for cheap hotels to offer high-speed wireless Internet, mini-refrigerators, microwaves, televisions and even a few cable channels. As far as on-site amenities go, many hotels will offer a swimming pool, business center or Internet point, laundry room and sometimes a Jacuzzi.

These hotels might be considered a cheap way to travel, but hey, sometimes cheap is the best way to travel! If you can find a decent and clean hotel for dollars a day, then you can save big on traditional hotel prices. Check online for budget motels and accommodations.
