What can you expect when you go on island travel? Whether you are going to celebrate in Hawaii, Maui, Aruba or are going on an adventure at the U.S. Virgin Islands or St. Barthelemy, there’s no vacation like an island vacation. An island vacation is something more than just a beach party or a stay in a luxurious hotel. Something about an island just brings out our primal selves, our lust for adventure and our yearning for cultural understanding.

How should you go about planning your island experience? If possible find an island with great natural resources like crystal clear water, waterfalls and tropical temperatures. What are some of the most popular activities at an island vacation? Diving, scuba diving and snorkeling are favorite recreational pastimes, as is hiking, and taking tours of natural phenomenon. (Like volcano tours.) It’s really up to each vacation party to determine their style of island adventure, whether it’s quiet and relaxing or busy and exciting. Some travelers enjoy bar hopping on the island, and drinking good quality wine under the night sky. Some prefer dining in an upscale restaurant while others are happy feasting on fruit and homemade meals. Popular dishes from island resorts include fish tacos, “fusion” food, Continental favorites, dim sum and of course, tropical fruit.

When creating your ideal island adventure, first choose your destination area. Be sure to research the land and determine (A) if it is safe this time of year, (B) if it is affordable with your budget and (C) if the island’s activities sound appealing to you and the family (or group of friends).
